Varalakshmi Vratham Puja Vidhana (Procedure)

Varalakshmi Vratham or Varamahalakshmi Festival is one of the popular festival to worship the Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Goddess Varalakshmi is one of the forms of Goddess Lakshmi, Wife of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that Goddess Varalakshmi bestows boons and fulfills all the desires of her devotees. Varalakshmi Vratham is observed on the last Friday during Shravana Shukla Paksha and falls just few days ahead of Shravana Purnima.

Varamahalakshmi Pooja 2023 Date:

Varamahalakshmi pooja is celebrated usually on the Friday’s of the Shukla Paksha of the month Shravana. This year, the Varamahalakshmi pooja will be celebrated on the 25 August (Shravan Shukravara). Generally, 2nd or 3rd Friday of Shravana month is considered auspicious for performing Varalakshmi Pooja.

Varalakshmi Pooja/Varamahalaksmi Pooja is dedicated to the Goddess of wealth (Goddess Maha Lakshmi). The main purpose of pooja or vrat is to gain the blessings of the Goddess Maha Lakshmi.

Goddess Maha Lakshmi showers prosperity and good fortune on her devotees. She grants all the wishes of her devotees.

Rules to follow While Fasting for Varamahalakshmi Vrat:

The rules are quite simple. Anyone can perform Varalakshmi Pooja, except under certain conditions. But, never force anyone to observe to fast. Anyone who does the pooja must do it whole-heartedly and with full devotion. Without the full dedication and interest, the pooja will not yield the desired results. Follow these general instructions while fasting for Varalakshmi Vratham.

  1. Don’t fast, if you are pregnant or sick.
  2. Usually the fasting starts from sunrise and is completed when the Lakshmi pooja is done. But, it is not compulsory, you can do it on your convenience.
  3. Avoid plantain, while cooking on that day.
  4. Naivedhyam or Prasada is the main food for the devotees who observe fasting on the occasion of Varalakshmi Vratham.
  5. Usually, the Varalakshmi Pooja is performed by the married Woman. Unmarried woman can also perform the pooja, but, needs her mother’s or any elder’s guidance.

Things required to perform Varalakshmi Pooja:

You must keep the following things/items ready well in advance, before performing the Varalakshmi Pooja.

  1. Varalakshmi Face
  2. Haridra (Turmeric Powder)
  3. Kumkum
  4. Chandan
  5. Akshata (Raw White Rice mixed with few pinches of Kumkum)
  6. Betel leaves
  7. Bananas
  8. Coconut
  9. Sacred Dhara (Red color)
  10. Milk
  11. Dry Fruits
  12. Mango leaves
  13. Flowers
  14. New Blouse piece
  15. Fruits
  16. Naivedhyam (recipes like payasam, gud anna payasam, appam)
  17. Panchamrutam- mixture of 5 ingredients (Milk, Ghee, Honey, Sugar and Curds)

Varalakshmi Puja Vidhi:

You can perform the Varamahalakshmi Pooja Vidhi in different manners. According to the Hindu Customs, You can perform Varalakshmi Vratham in 3 ways.

Three Ways to perform Varamahalakshmi Pooja: Shodashopachara Puja; Dvatrinshopachara Puja; Simple Varalakshmi Pooja;

Shodashopachara Puja Vidhana:

16 upacharas or services offered to God according to the Hindu Pooja Paddati. All 16 types of upacharas like
Avahanam, Aasanam, Padyam, Arghyam, Achamanam, Snanam, Vasthram, Yagnopaveetham, Gandham, Alankaram, Pushpam, Dhupam, Deepam, Naivedyam, Thambulam, and
Nirajanam.

Dvatrinshopachara Puja Vidhana:

32 upacharas or services offered to God according to the Hindu Pooja Paddati. All 32 types of upacharas like

Dhyanam, Avahanam, Asanam, Padyam, Arghyam, Achamanam, Panchamrita Snanam, Snanam, Vastram, Kanthasutra, abharanam, Gandha Samarpana, Saubhagya Dravyam, Pushpa Samarpana, Anga-Puja, Dhoopam, Deepam, Naivedyam, Tambulam, Dakshina, Nirajanam, Dorakagrahana, Dorakabandhana, Punararghyam, Bilvapatra, Pradakshina, Namaskara, Vrata Samarpan, Prarthana, Vayanamantra and Puja Samarpan.

Simple Varalakshmi Pooja Vidhana:

If you are not aware of the Pooja Vidhana to perform Varalakshmi Pooja, But, you are very much interested in doing it yourself then you can perform Varalakshmi Poojam involving the Simple Procedures like lighting the lamp, meditating Goddess Varalakshmi, offering Naivedhyam to Goddess Varalakshmi, Chanting MahaLakshmi Ashtottaram and finishing the Pooja by doing aarti to the deity Varalakshmi.

Note:
Before you begin the varalakshmi Pooja, remember to pray the Lord Ganesha first. Chant any slokas of Ganapati you know. Because Lord Ganesha is Prathama Pujita. Lord Ganesha Pooja is done at the beginning so that no obstacles is occurred while performing Varalakshmi Pooja.
